"National LGBT Center Movement Work Highlighted In Upcoming Awareness Day"

July 07, New York, NY - CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers, serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender centers and advancing the national LGBT center movement, is pleased to announce the first annual LGBT Center Awareness Day this September 15 with today's launch of a new website at MyCenterLink.org and an updated online LGBT community center directory.

"We're hard at work to coordinate the first ever nationwide day of action focused on LGBT community centers," said Terry Stone, CenterLink's Executive Director. "Over 40,000 people visit the over 180 community centers each week and centers have more direct access to the LGBT community than any other organization. Centers are the real backbone of the LGBT movement, and we are excited to highlight that work through Center Awareness Day."

The theme of this year's LGBT Center Awareness Day is "My Community Center Changed My Life," showcasing the vital role that community centers play in the health, empowerment, and unity of all LGBT communities. Events will take place at local centers all over the country in celebration of the day, with the flagship CenterLink sponsored event being hosted in Los Angeles at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, the nation's largest LGBT community center, and one of the oldest.

LGBT Center Awareness Day also has a civil rights equality push on a national scope, with an organized effort for municipal, county, and state proclamations honoring the day and the work that LGBT centers do, as well as efforts to get individuals everywhere engaged in "personal awareness actions," ranging from wearing a button to visiting a center. In addition, a "Share Your Story" campaign will enable anyone to submit a 2-minute video of how their LGBT center impacted their life or the life of someone they know, which could be selected as a national awareness video and used throughout the campaign.

"Our community centers serve as the first point of contact for many folks," said David Stocum, Executive Director of New Mexico GLBTQ Centers, a state-wide LGBT center movement formed over the last three years. "We connect individuals to resources and funnel human resources to all levels of the LGBT movement. Center Awareness Day is about raising the centers' visibility, increasing the connections we can make and better supporting the movement as a whole."
